Peter Harrell joined the Secretary’s Policy Planning Staff in March 2009. His current portfolio includes legal issues, economic sanctions, a variety of trade, commercial diplomacy, investment, and economic issues, and several issues related to global governance institutions. Prior to joining the Department, Harrell served in a variety of capacities with President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign and on the Transition Team for the incoming Administration. He has worked as a reporter in Washington, D.C., and is the author of Rwanda’s Gamble: Gacaca and a New Model of Transitional Justice. Mr. Harrell is a graduate of Princeton and the Yale Law School.
