This map shows the location of several significant programmatic results achieved by the Department of State in FY 2005. It gives an indication of the breadth of Department of State activities and the regions in which the Department carries out America's foreign policy. Significant results displayed are as follows:

  1. The U.S. and Mexico launch the Security and Prosperity Partnership to enhance continental security and promote economic growth.
  2. Civil violence in Colombia drops dramatically as the government's security presence reaches throughout the country.
  3. Israel withdraws from the Gaza Strip.
  4. Libya continues to eliminate its nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and long range missiles.
  5. Egypt holds its first competitive presidential elections; opposition parties register and organize voters.
  6. Liberia successfully holds presidential elections, becoming the first African country to elect a female head of state.
  7. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement for Sudan concludes in January 2005.
  8. Burundi sees a successful presidential transition and the return of refugees.
  9. The Afghan National Army fully establishes influence throughout the country, with 39 battalions operational and thousands of militia members disarmed and demobilized.
  10. India agrees to adopt strong and effective export controls on nuclear materials.
  11. The Government of Thailand partners with the U.S. to create an enforcement network in Southeast Asia against the illegal trade in endangered species.
  12. China and Vietnam release religious prisoners.
  13. North Korea signs with the U.S. and our partners a joint statement of principles reaffirming the goal of verifiable, peaceful, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
  14. The U.S. and Russia reduce the number of deployed strategic nuclear weapons through implementation of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and the Moscow Treaty.
  15. Iraq holds free and democratic elections for the first time in over half a century, followed by a constitutional referendum.
