Carnegie Corporation of New York was created by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 to promote the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding," The last of Carnegie's great endowments, it is the only one established as a grantmaking foundation. Under Carnegie's will, grants must benefit the people of the United States, although up to 7.4 percent of the funds may be used for the same purpose in countries that are or have been members of the British Commonwealth as of 1948.
Currently, the foundation is focused on four program areas: Education, International Peace and Security, International Development, and Strengthening U.S. Democracy. The program areas that are now the focus of the Corporation's work have evolved over time, adapting to changing circumstances as Andrew Carnegie wished. While current program directions have been designed to correspond with the Corporation's historic mission and legacy and to maintain the continuity of its work, they are also intended to serve as catalysts for change.
