DC Area Health and Medical Information

HEALTH INSURANCE

For information on U.S. Government health plans, go to http://www.opm.gov/insure/health/ . You can change to a local plan if you prefer. Research plans thoroughly, as there are many options that are not available overseas. Don't get caught with a big bill -- make sure you know which local doctors and facilities are preferred providers for your plan.

DOCTORS

For ratings of local doctors, see Consumers' Checkbook or Washingtonian's online guide at http://subscriber.washingtonian.com/TopDoctors

DENTISTS

Be aware that it may take six months to get an initial appointment with a dentist. Sometimes the dentists need confirmation from your insurance before even making the appointment. Not all dentists work with federal plans.
Washingtonian lists dentists at: http://www.washingtonian.com/packages/topdentists2011/index.html
